Inspirational Image Post (a.k.a.: I haven’t had much to write about lately, so here is a picture I like)

Quick, take the picture before this thing's mother shows up!

I’ve always liked the above painting by Larry Elmore, and I spent a fair bit of time looking at it in the Second Edition Player’s Handbook. I’ve always felt that these adventurers look overly proud of themselves and that tiny box of treasure. I feel like their pride in their accomplishment says a lot about what kind of effort it must have taken to kill this tiny dragon, and how difficult it would be to fight a “real” dragon.

  1. I’ve found that the most evocative art came out of AD&D second edition. It was more mature than 1st editions art, but definitely lack the sort of weird modern fantasy ‘punk’ art that came into play in 3rd edition where everything was brown.

    My favorite pieces come out of Dragonlance. The death of Sturm hits hard.
